Sunday Edit | 10 Beauty Trend Predictions for 2023, According to Experts
Just as with fashion, beauty trends come and go — and it always seems to be cyclical with the changing years. This is true in all areas of beauty — skincare, haircare, makeup, you name it. What’s in one year may very well be out in the next, or even within a handful of months, and much of this is determined by the seasons.
We’re seeing trends come from makeup artists and amateur creators alike — and we have Instagram and TikTok to thank for that. It’s much easier for a certain trend to catch on and there always seems to be a new trend right behind it.
If you’re hoping to get ahead of the crowd and capitalize on beauty trends even before they’ve caught on with everyone else, here’s what beauty professionals believe will be most popular in 2023.
Bustle | Beauty Experts Say These Things Make You Look Better With Almost No Effort
2022 Beauty Trends That Will Transform Your Routine
Sometimes, you just need a change. We’re all about beauty routines – they keep our skin hydrated and healthy and our makeup poppin’ – but if they become too habitual, things can get a little boring.
Maybe you’re in the opposite camp. After a year of staying on your toes, battling maskne, and worrying about COVID-related hair loss, you’re just ready for something better.
As Allure observes, “2021 did do a fabulous job of keeping us guessing: After a year of intense shifts in priorities, new skin-care concerns, and supply chain issues all due to COVID-19, the beauty world looks as different as we all feel.”
If you’ve been looking to experiment with some fresher, bolder looks to get you out of your rut and on-trend, these are the new trends in beauty to try.
Makeup trends 2022
Whether you want a different makeup look for everyday of the week or are shooting for a new signature style, these makeup moments are sure to inspire.
- 60s-style eyeliner. Did someone say double-winged liner? It’s the bolder, older sister of reverse cat eye and flattering on virtually every eye shape, since it accentuates the lid and brow.
- Wet-look makeup. Ever tried matching your lip gloss to your lid gloss? It’s a very insta-worthy way to get your glow on.
- Face Jewels. That’s right – they’re not just for music festivals anymore. For a tasteful shimmer, add a dot or two at the inner corner of your eyes or to the bottom of your lid in line with your pupil. For an all-out affair, use them as freckles or to frame your eyes above and below the brow.
- Pastel eyeshadows. This isn’t your average easter egg. Hot pinks and mint greens are especially big right now, with many makeup artists coloring outside the lines.
- Statement blush. From bold shades to new shapes, it seems like everyone is experimenting with the placement and amount of blush they use.
Beauty trends 2022
Moisturizer certainly has its place, but if you really want to step up your beauty routine, you may need to add a few more steps and products.
Try treating your skin to:
- A microchanneling facial. It’s one of the newest skin care trends celebs and estheticians can’t seem to get enough of. Microchanneling is a less painful way to experience all the benefits of microneedling – without the days-long downtime. It’s done with a stamp instead of a roller, so there’s less chance of tearing and inflaming the skin.
- Glycolic acid exfoliation. Take it from TLC, during summer, we don’t want no scrubs. Because your skin is already getting more sun than usual, textured scrubs can be really damaging. Instead, add a year-round glycolic acid step to your skincare routine with either a daily toner or weekly mask. You may feel some tingles, especially if you’re regularly using retinol products, but it’s a great way to sluff off dead skin and penetrate the layers of moisturizer and sunscreen you’re (hopefully) using. That way, the rest of your products can absorb better. Plus it’s got natural anti-aging properties. Win, win.
- Mineral sunscreens. These lotions used to get a bad rap for their chalky white streaks. But these next-generation sunscreen products have come a long way! Many absorb fully and transparently, offering you a literal block against the sun. They’re also great for sensitive skin, kinder to the environment, and don’t absorb into the bloodstream like their chemical counterparts. You can even get tinted options to better even-out skin tone.
Hair trends 2022
From daily ‘dos to cute cuts, these are the hair trends popping up all over Hollywood right now.
- Bubble pony pigtails and tendrils. Your dirty hair days just got a whole lot cuter. The look is impressive, but don’t be intimidated. With nothing more than a few small elastics and a comb, you can create beautiful, bubbly shapes that make you look like you stepped right out of an instagram ad, just like Tessa Thompson or the Hadid Sisters.
- Rocker-chic shag. You need only look to celebs like Rhianna and Miley Cirus to see the appeal of this edgy, low-maintenance cut. Popularized by Joan Jett in the 80s, the look has had a resurgence as pandemic-created salon closures left us all reeling for a way to stay current while staying home.
- “Wet” waves. Think that just-got-out-of-the-shower look isn’t right for your next night out on the town? Think again. Megan Fox and Margo Robbie have been seen rocking textured, wet-looking waves that are perfect for summer.

Easy, Unforgettable Halloween Makeup Ideas for the Whole Family
Halloween’s a time to free your inner creativity and let your imagination run amuck.
But you don’t have to be an artist to conjure up a bewitching halloween makeup look. You don’t have to be a ghoul or makeup professional either. We’ve dug up some spellbinding halloween makeup ideas and tutorials for the entire family.
Spooky Animal Kingdom
Animal makeup is among the most family friendly halloween costume ideas out there. Not only are the options endless, they’re also appropriate for any age group or event type.
Some of our favorite kids halloween makeup ideas include:
- An adorable white rabbit. (Bonus points if you paint their finger orange like a carrot.)
- A doe with white spots on the face.
- A black cat – or tiger if you want something more involved.
- A fish/mermaid.
- A bat.
- A unicorn
- A butterfly.
Any of the above can be easily replicated on the big kids in the family to create a proper menagere.
Creepy Clowns
Clowns come in all varieties. By and large, most folks consider them creepy, but you can take the look in a few different directions.
- Kids clown costume. For a less scary version, stick with a rainbow theme. The more polkadots and multicolored stripes you can incorporate, the less menacing it will look. Don’t forget a red rubber nose to complete the look!
- Female clown costume. You create a full out Pennywise costume with a few swipes of red lipstick. Simply do your makeup as you normally would. When it comes time for his signature red lipstick, continue a curvy line from each corner of your mouth up past your eyebrow. Complete with a bit of pink or red eyeshadow to pull it all together. Or, you can recreate a Harley Quinn look with some pig tails, blue and pink temporary hair color with matching eyeshadow, one liquid eyeliner heart below your eye, and a swipe of red lipstick.
- Male clown costume. Whether you put together a Joker costume or go more jester, focus on black, white, and red, or primary colors like red, yellow, and blue. With a bit of white face paint and a few thoughtfully placed triangles that complement your color scheme and you’ll be ready to make ‘em laugh (or run in fear).
Bone Chilling Skeletons
There’s really no need to be intimidated at the thought of doing skeleton makeup for halloween. With a little quality black and white face paint and some smudging skills, your look will be to die for.
The main thing to remember is to follow the natural contours of your face. Anywhere there’s bone underneath you’ll want to accentuate. That includes the sockets of your eyes, your temples, the bridge of your nose, under your cheekbones, and along your jawline. Using eyeliner, you can also draw “teeth” over your mouth and lips to tie it all together.
Looking for some last-minute skeleton makeup ideas? Try:
- Put makeup on the bottom half of your face.
- Paint the right or left side of your face only.
- Simply outlining your bones with a pencil liner.
Devilish Delight
Is devil halloween makeup really all red paint and horns? It is if you want it to be! Devil makeup can be as complicated or simplified as you like.
Whether you choose to paint your entire face pink, red, or purple or just use some red glitter to accent your inner demon, there’s no wrong way to be bad.
It’s also one of the most popular halloween makeup ideas for guys since it takes so little to look so sinister. From bloody horns and upside down crosses to hand-drawn devil tails and exaggerated eyebrows, it’s fun to be naughty.
Petrifying Pop Art
Few halloween looks will have your friends doing a double take like this Roy Lichtenstein-inspired pop art makeup. You’ll be amazed at how much a few purposefully placed lines and coordinated dots will make you look like a moving painting. See this pop art makeup tutorial video for details!
Halloween Makeup FAQ:
How do I make my foundation pale?
Going a shade or two lighter than you normally wear can help you achieve the ghastly look you’re after. You can also add some liquid white makeup to the foundation you already have to lighten things up. Just be sure to moisturize well to avoid cracking.
Can I mix foundation with concealer to make it darker?
Mixing a foundation with another foundation or liquid face paint is recommended. Concealer is usually thicker, which could mess with the desired consistency and cause caking.
Can I use lipstick instead of face paint?
Yes! Cream stain lipsticks are recommended if you want a more precise accent. Just make sure you wash off thoroughly at the end of the night to avoid breakouts.
Is Halloween makeup safe for kids?
Most halloween makeup is safe for kids, but always read the ingredient list first and test out a small patch before using all over your child’s face to make sure they’re not allergic.

How To Summer-Proof Your Makeup As Temps Heat Up
Ahh, summer – warmer weather means carefree fun in the sun all season long. That is until the mercury rises and you start pouring like a faucet. It’s near impossible to be chill when your skin starts to sweat and you can feel your makeup melting. Plus, let’s face it, it’s hard to pull off raccoon eyes or a smeared eyebrow – no matter how cute your summer wardrobe is.
Don’t lose hope though. A combination of the right products (high-end or drugstore) paired with tried-and-true summer makeup techniques can help you keep your face in place.
Prep skin first
Before you ever pick up a makeup brush, prepare your skin for fun in the sun. Literally. Start by washing with a gentle cleanser and follow with an oil control toner. The less oil and dirt you have on your face starting out, the better your products will penetrate. Any makeup you do you use will also sit more securely on the skin.
Follow up with an oil-free moisturizer – the lighter the better. Bonus points if you can find one with SPF built-in to reduce the number of moisturizing products you need to apply.
Reapply SPF often
Whatever you do, don’t skip the SPF. It’s probably the single most important part of the application process. You need one with a factor of at least 30 and should be reapplying it every two hours (more if you are swimming or sweating heavily).
Worried about all the extra applications making you look too shiny? Try a powdered face sunscreen. They’re perfect for those who want to stay protected without disrupting their makeup. Just be sure to use a mineral sunscreen underneath as your primary application since powder sunscreens are really best for touch-ups.
Use a quality primer
Primer is (sweaty) hands down the best way to ensure makeup stays in its place as temps creep up. Once you’ve applied your sunscreen, do a quick swipe of primer to mattify your face, blur fine lines and set your skin.
Use over a tinted moisturizer to keep it smudge-free or apply before your full concealer and foundation routine to keep them in place all day long. A waterproof or water-based option is a plus here.
Invest in blotting papers
Feeling shiny? A pack of oil-absorbing blotting papers can be a quick fix.
They’re also a good alternative to applying more makeup layers. They won’t disrupt the makeup you already have on either.
Try cream blushes and bronzers
The problem with powdered blushes and bronzers is that they can eventually get streaky or cakey in the heat. Opting for a cream blush or bronzer stick is a lighter-weight option that can give you an enviable summer glow.
Apply sparingly to the apples of your cheeks, near the scalp line on either side of your forehead, the tip of your nose, and the bottom of your chin for a quick, cake-free contour.
Go with a bold color lip stain
No list of summertime makeup tips would be complete without a little lip. Lip stains can be a nice alternative to waxy lipsticks when you’re out sipping with friends. They’re also simple to reapply and are virtually weightless, meaning you won’t have to worry about them smearing as you sweat.
Bold colors like coral are flattering for most skin tones and ideal for warmer weather. Not sure you can pull it off? You can’t go wrong with a simple summer gloss either.
Waterproof everything!
Waterproof products are the darlings of hot weather makeup. Your favorite brands probably already have waterproof versions of the items you use most often, so consider making the switch for summer.
Waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and concealer are popular choices for summer. In fact, depending on your skin, they may be some of the only products you really need. Some find that wearing less makeup in summer is actually better for their skin. And since they have more natural color during warmer months, it’s fun to show off their sun-kissed skin.
Summer makeup tips FAQ
Understanding how to wear makeup in summer isn’t always intuitive. Use these tips for long-lasting makeup in summer to keep you fresh-faced all season.
How do you make your makeup last longer during the summer?
Good skin prep and having a plan for touch-ups is a great way to make your makeup last. Setting powder, for example, might not be part of your everyday routine, but it can be a great step to add when the weather is warm.
How should you do your makeup for a hot day?
That depends on the day’s events! In general, many find that less makeup during the summer months is key. All you really need are a few basics.
Is makeup good during the summer?
Your skin may change a bit in summer, and that’s ok. So long as you’re mindful about updating your makeup and skincare routines, you should be ready for any summer adventure!
